How Important is Your Title in Your Home Based Business?

A home based business is relatively small when compared to corporate businesses. The number of people working under one business name is lesser as well. However, the need for professionalism doesn't reduce with a small business. Even if you are running a business from your home, it doesn't mean that you don't need a designation.

Why you need a title?

Having a title will give your business a professional element and will endow you with a sense of responsibility. People who invest in your product or services will have a better idea of what you do in your business.

Having a proper title will help you in building the trust with customers, because they will know that you are not just a random person, trying to earn money sitting through some home based business scheme. When an agreement is signed by the 'manager' rather than a John Doe, it lends more credibility to the business.

How will you decide on what your title should be?

It should be based on your strengths. If advertising is not your forte, then labelling yourself as advertising manager isn't going to help your business, whether you do it or not. If you are good at accounting, finance manager will be a good designation. It is not necessary to call yourself as the CEO just because you own the business.

Can you handle multiple titles? That won't be a bad choice if it fits your profile well. As your business grows, the number of departments also grows. You can be the finance and advertising head of your own business, if that is what you concentrate more on.

You don't need to have a title for each department especially, when your business is small. A shop owner does not need a CEO, a chairman and a managing director. In this case, more appropriate titles like manager or accountant can be chosen instead of big names.

Fitting in

You should not choose a title which you are not comfortable with it. Labelling yourself a CEO does not make you one. You have got to be aware of the responsibilities of a CEO if your call yourself one. You need to find out what skills are needed to be a CEO and what ethics you need to follow. Only then can you execute the role of a CEO in its entirety.

Whatever title you choose for yourself for your home based business, the results should speak highly of your position. A good finance manager should be able to bring about clarity in the financial aspects of the business.

Therefore, when you choose a title, you must prove yourself worthy of it.
