- Your domain name should be about you or your product. If you are creating a website on telescopes, for example you might try checking if myfirsttelescope.com is available. Having the content of your webpage reflected in your domain name will help the search engines and your visitors find it easier.
- Choosing the extension. If it's going to be a commercial webpage is best to go with a .com. For organizations it's best to go with a .org of course. A .net is ok if it's a business and the .com that you really have to have is unavailable.
- It's best to keep it simple. All the dictionary word domain names have long since been taken, but there are many three or four word phrases still available you just might need to be creative and take a little time and keep trying until you find the right one.
- Shorter is better. Staying with the telescope example, something like wefindthebesttelescopepricesforyou.com would be way too long. Try to find something shorter like telescopedealsonline.com.
- Make sure your domain name is easy to say. It is really best not to use hyphens in your domain name as it's pretty hard to tell someone the URL and explain where the hyphens go. If you can't tell someone the domain without explaining something about it, it's probably not simple enough. If you ever have a radio ad for your website you're going to want to make sure listeners can type it in right the first time. In either case practice saying the domain name out loud several times and you can even pretend you're hearing it on the radio and make sure you go with one that is easy to remember and then type in.
